Vixens and Eagles Battle on Homecoming

SWEET BRIAR, Va. ---  The Sweet Briar field hockey team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to ODAC rival Bridgewater College on Satuday afternoon.  The tight contest was played in front of approximately 150 boisterous fans at Thayer Field.

The match was a scoreless affair until the 61st minute, when senior Joan Burleson (Newport News, Va. / Menchville) tucked a ball inside the left post, under a diving Katie Torretti (Lemon Grove, Calif. / Bishops School) to give the Eagles the lead.  Torretti was outstanding in goal for the Vixens, stopping a career-high 23 shots.  In addition to her save total, Torretti added several aggressive clears to relieve pressure in her circle.

Head Coach Jess Lamina noted, "I am so proud of the entire team effort that we put forward this afternoon.  Every member of the team worked hard for their teammates out there today."

Before the game, Sweet Briar honored seniors Alyssa Berkeley (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) and Brooke Scott (Kemah, Texas/Episcopal) for their contributions to the field hockey program.  The College also celebrated Homecoming and Familes Weekend and inducted four new members of the Athletics and Riding Hall of Fame.  Among the inductees was field hockey alumna, Sally True Dow-Datilio '80.

Sweet Briar will return to action on Thursday, September 25th, when they host Lynchburg College in a 4:30p.m. matchup.
