SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The Sweet Briar College lacrosse team hosted Randolph College on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon at Babcock Field. The visiting WildCats fell behind early, but fought back for a 20-5 victory.
The Vixens jumped out to an early lead when Elizabeth Phaup scored the first of her two goals on a free position 15 seconds into the contest. Phaup would net her second of the game and fourth of the season less than two minutes later.
Also scoring goals during the contest were first-years Victoria Lawson and Kierstan Mullins and senior Jessica Lusby. For Mullins, her first-half tally marks the first of her collegiate career. Phaup picked up her first assist of the season on Lusby's first goal of the season.
To go with her two goals and one assist, Phaup led SBC by grabbing four draw controls and one groundball. Lawson also tallied two draw controls during the contest.
As a team, Sweet Briar caused seven turnovers, with Chelsea Alvarado registering two. The senior from Chantilly, Va. also grabbed two groundballs. First-year Flo Mohammed had a good game with two ground balls, a draw control, and a caused turnover. Senior Kiley Jolicoeur led the team with three groundballs and also caused one turnover.
Junior Shawnta Sherman played all 60 minutes in cage for SBC and made nine saves in the effort.
The Vixens will return to action next Wednesday, April 19, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 4:30 p.m. match. SBC will then celebrate Senior Day during the home finale on Saturday, April 22, against Shenandoah.
