Sweet Briar College Head Lacrosse Coach Meredith Newman announced her team's 2018 schedule on Wednesday afternoon.
This spring season will be Newman's second at the helm of SBC lacrosse after she came back to her alma mater in the fall of 2016.
"Since we started fall ball almost one month ago, the excitement and anticipation of the spring season have been building," Newman said. "Our team looks to be very committed and determined to shatter the goals we have set and establish a new standard for Sweet Briar Lacrosse."
Sweet lax will open its season at home on Feb. 10 against a familiar foe in Ferrum College.
"We start our season against Ferrum in early February to get a true measure of where we are and what we need to focus on in the two weeks following the match as we prepare to play five first-year programs."
The young squad will get its first taste of the road on Feb. 24 when they head to North Carolina to face off against William Peace University. In March, the Vixens will play two matches over spring break, the first being at home against Division II Davis & Elkins College on March 2. The team will then head south to play Salem College on March 7.
"We scheduled independently this year, and have joined the Independent Women's Lacrosse Schools Conference so that we will be eligible for all conference, player of the week, and academic honors," explained Newman.
Following spring break, Sweet Briar will play six home matches in-a-row to round out the month of March. That run of contests includes Chatham University (March 10), Averett University (March 15), Juniata College (March 18) and, Elmhurst College (March 21). The match against Elmhurst will serve as the annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Match, where the coaches and team show their gratitude for Sweet Briar's excellent faculty and staff.
SBC will celebrate Senior Day on March 24 when Linfield College from Oregon visits campus. SBC will wrap up its 2018 home campaign on March 27 when they host College of Mount Saint Vincent at Babcock Field.
The Vixens will wrap up their 12-game slate with road games at Southern Virginia University on April 3 and Randolph College on April 7.
"We're looking to make a statement this year; every game is a big game. Our schedule affords for many opportunities to compete and we could certainly stand to surprise some teams."
