Lone Senior Lifka to Lead Vixen Side
FOREST, Va. --- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) has released the 2012 Preseason Women's Soccer Poll. Vixen Soccer opens the fall playing season with a 14th place conference ranking. Head Coach Kevin Fabulich returns six players and welcomes 11 newcomers to his squad.
Sweet Briar plays two non-conference opponents prior to jumping into league play. Fabulich is pleased with the team's preseason performance, "we have an entirely new team and our training sessions have been very energetic. The two opening games are a great intro for the season and we look forward to competing in the ODAC."
The always rugged ODAC Women's Soccer field boasts two nationally ranked teams. Lynchburg College is ranked 15th in the 2012 NSCAA Preseason Poll while Virginia Wesleyan College starts the season ranked 20th. New at the conference level for 2012-13, Shenadoah University is a full league member.
The SBC side will call upon senior midfielder Ali Lifka (Arden, N.C./ T. C. Roberson) for leadership on and off the field. Sophomores Emily Spivey (Dillwyn, Va./Buckingham County) and Nina Kappel (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) will bolster Lifka's lead. The duo posted a combined 21 starts last year and look to improve upon first-year performances with Kappel anchoring the defense and Spivey spurring the attack.
Striker Lynn Lunde '16 (Dallas, Tex./Creekview) headlines a large first-year class for the Vixens. Katherine Tillson '16 (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) receives the nod for starting keeper duties while other notable newcomers include defender Katherine Day '16 (Clifton Forge, Va. / James River) and transfer midfielder Marissa McCord '15 (Asheville, N.C. / T.C. Roberson).
The 2012 playing season begins on Friday, August 31 with an away contest against William Peace University. Vixen Soccer returns to campus for its home opener on Saturday, September 8 when SBC hosts the visiting Owls of Bryn Mawr.
