Rubber Match Scheduled for Babcock Opener
SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Vixen Soccer hosts Bryn Mawr College on Saturday, September 8 at Babcock Field. The non-conference affair is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Both teams sport youthful rosters and both teams eye season first wins. The Owls and Vixens tangled a year ago in the Bryn Mawr Tournament. In the previous meeting the Owls secured a 3-0 win, avenging their 2010 over-time loss to Sweet Briar. Coach Fabulich's squad looks to return the favor this weekend.
In the first 2012 outing at William Peace, the Vixen side created their chances on goal. Forwards and midfielders tested the keeper with the best opportunities coming one in each half. During the first frame, Marissa McCord '15 (Asheville, N.C./T.C. Roberson) placed a free kick right at the front door barely missing two crashing Vixens, Ashley Federico '16 (Milford, N.H. / Milford) and Ali Lifka '13 (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson). Deep in the second, Lifka ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box that the WPU net minder hauled in for a save.
Rookie keeper Katherine Tillson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) now has her first collegiate game under her belt and expects to be more vocal in helping returning defender Nina Kappel '15 (Rye, N.H. / Portsmouth) direct the defense.
Marissa McCord, sophomore midfielder: The first game was kind of nerve racking, but once the game got going, I settled in and I am now excited to play at home for the first time. I am ready to play in front of our crowd. There is nothing like taking pride in wearing the SBC jersey.
Kevin Fabulich, Vixen Soccer head coach: During the first part of the week, our training sessions are focused on boosting fitness levels while we are still in non-conference play. We have seen a 23% increase in our overall aerobic fitness and we are looking for increases early in the season. I am excited about opening at home with Bryn Mawr. They are a well coached team and it will be fun to host them for our big opening weeked.
