SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- On Saturday, October 20 in front of packed hillside at Babcock Field, Sweet Briar College honored senior defender Ali Lifka (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson) To date, the defender has played in fifty-three contests while wearing the SBC pink and green. Over her career, Lifka has collected 10 points on five goals scored.
The Vixen side appeared poised to send off its senior with a win. After conceding a goal in the first half, SBC came out on attack. At the 31:37 mark, Guilford set up for a corner. Quaker defender Cassie Vaughn (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) sent in a corner kick which Kelli Uresti (Buda/Tex./Jack C. Hays) headed. SBC keeper Katherine Tillson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) made the initial save, however, Guilford's Libby Hicks (Hanover, Md./Meade) was right there to head home the rebound for the opening score.
SBC immediately responded with several good looks from Lynn Lunde (Dallas, Tex./Creekview) and Marissa McCord (Asheville, N.C./T.C. Roberson). Lunde missed just high and McCord erred just wide, but the Vixens were energized by the attack. A few minutes later Lifka was whistled for a hard tackle in the box. Tillson smothered the ensuing penalty kick and again the Vixens fed off that energy. The half ended with the visitors holding a narrow 1-0 lead.
Guilford scored two minutes into the final frame to push their lead to 2-0. Lunde answered five minutes later when she collected a goal kick and beat Guilford's Miriam Davis-Rosenbaum in a 1 on 1. With the score 2-1, SBC again stepped up their attack.
The Quakers also ramped up their efforts and generated a finally tally at 63:33. Uresti, intending to send a cross into the Vixen 18-yard box, hooked in a far post shot for the score. Down the stretch SBC generated several dangerous scoring opportunities. McCord, Lunde, Emily Spivey (Dillwyn, Va. / Buckingham County) and Lifka all put shots on frame, but could not get past the Guilford keeper. The game ended with the Quakers stealing a 3-1 victory.
Vixen Soccer returns to action one final time in the 2012 regular playing season. On Wednesday, October 24 SBC travels to Lexington, Va. for a match with league opponent Washington and Lee University. The contest is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
