SWEET BRIAR, Va.- Playing their penultimate home match of the 2017 season, the Sweet Briar College soccer team hosted Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets pushed with relentless pressure all afternoon, winning the match 10-0.
Sweet Briar goalkeepers Caroline Thomas and Sam Holton split time in the goal, and each made some fantastic saves to keep SBC in the game. Thomas, a junior from Appomattox, Va., started and played the first 45 minutes of the match and made 16 saves while allowing only four goals. That total is the highest in a single half this season for Thomas. The first-year Holton took over following the intermission and made 11 saves over the final 45 minutes of play.
Despite the scoreline, the Vixens were able to generate some offensive momentum with their counterattack, which was sparked by well-played passes from Alexa Dahlin and Caylin Newman. Midfielder Melissa Wert also played a solid game with some timely passes to striker Catherine Ford.
Sweet Briar will celebrate Senior Day and wrap up the 2017 home season on Wednesday, Oct. 35, when Randolph College pays a visit to Babcock Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., with the Senior Day ceremony beginning around 3:40 p.m.
