SWEET BRIAR, Va.--- The Sweet Briar swimming team hosted Randolph-Macon College in their first home meet of the 2012-13 season on Saturday. In the double dual meet format, the Randolph-Macon men's team took on the team from Hampden-Sydney. On a Saturday full of strong swims from the Vixens, they fell to the Yellow Jackets 114-83.
The meet began with an impressive second place finish from the 200m Medley Relay team of Quinn Griswold (Alpine, N.Y. / Odessa-Montour), Marian Huber (Newport News, Va. / Menchville), Dani Humphrey (Newport News, Va. / Menchville) and Ronni Schoenherr (Hudson, Wisc. / Hudson) in 2:17.35.
Humphrey returned to the pool for the 50m Freestyle and pulled out a thrilling victory that came at a .02 second margin over May McNeil (Portland, Ore. / Central Catholic) of Randolph-Macon. Humphrey and McNeil battled once again in the 100m Butterfly. This time it was McNeil who touched .34 seconds ahead of Humphrey for first place.
The split-second finishes continued in the 200m Individual Medley. An outstanding race between R-MC's Katie Houle (Mount Pleasant, SC / Academic Magnet) and SBC's Huber was decided when Houle touched the wall .35 seconds ahead of Huber. Huber exacted a measure of revenge when she took first place in the 100m Breaststroke, besting Houle with a time of 1:23.74
Other standout performances for the Vixens included a second place finish from first-year Lydia Fleck (Poquoson, Va / Poquoson) in the 800m Freestyle and a third place touch from Rosie Purvis (Montgomery City, Mo. / Homeschooled) in the 100m Freestyle.
Sweet Briar returns to competition on friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m., when they host Washington and Lee University in a dual meet in Prothro Natatorium.
