Vixens Race Past Panthers

SWEET BRIAR, Va. ---  The Vixen swimming team won decisively on Tuesday night, taking a 131-66 victory over Ferrum College.   SBC touched first in 9 of 11 events on the evening.

First-years Mollie Smith (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Dobbs Ferry) and Megan Monahan (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) each claimed victories in two individual events for the Vixens.  Smith won the 1500m freestyle, finishing over a minute faster than her nearest competitor and also took first in the 100m butterfly.  Monahan, meanwhile, set her fourth program record in her young career.  Her 400m freestyle time of 4:47.58 bested the previous mark of 4:47.65, set by Autumn Matysek-Snyder on December 5, 2000.  Monahan also touched the wall first in the 200m freestyle earlier in meet.

SBC swimmers Margaret Raymond (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) and Mary McDevitt (Yulee, Fla./Camden County) also turned in strong performances.  Raymond won the 200m individual medley and placed second in the 400m freestyle.  McDevitt was victorious in the 100m breaststroke and took second in the 50m freestyle.  Senior Lauré Herzog (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) added a win in the 100m backstroke for Sweet Briar.

For the Panthers, sophomore Jess Rowsey (Durham, N.C./Cary Academy) won two events, the 50m and 100m freestyle races.

The evening began with a heartfelt ceremony honoring longtime coach Bonnie Kestner.  Kestner, who began the swimming program at Sweet Briar 37 years ago, will retire at the end of the 2013-14 academic year.

"Everyone stepped up this evening," shared head coach Jason Gallaher.  "I was very happy to see how well the team raced.  We are progressing nicely.  It was great to see another school record fall in the 400 Freestyle.  I'm also very happy that we were able to honor Bonnie Kestner prior to the meet.  She deserves to be honored for all that she has done here at Sweet Briar and for the Swimming Program."

The Vixens will return to the pool on Friday evening, traveling to Washington and Lee University to take on the Generals at 6:00 p.m.
