The Sweet Briar swimming team returned to competition after the holiday break with strong performances across the board as they posted victories against ODAC rivals Greensboro College and Guilford College. The Vixens defeated Greensboro 94-74 and bested Guilford 115-50. Pfeiffer University, a DII entry into the meet, outlasted SBC 110-75.
Sweet Briar was led by several strong performances by senior Claire Zak. Zak began her night with a second place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle, followed by two third-place touches in the 100 IM (1:19.38) and the 100 breaststroke (1:27.82). The Vixens were also buoyed by a pair of third-place finishes from first-year Dharma Kear in the 1000 freestyle (14:1.07) and the 100 butterfly (1:19.18). Fellow first-year Lauren Graham finished second in the 50 freestyle (28.72) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:17.31).
Both of Sweet Briar's relay teams claimed second place finishes in their events. The 200 medley relay (Sarah Ahson, Theresa Carriveau, Kear, Graham) touched in 2:18.92. The 200 freestyle relay (Kat Carter, Nora Florio, Caroline Thomas, Sarah Cahoone) finished in 2:31.03.
The Vixens return to the pool on Saturday, January 20. Sweet Briar will host Hampden-Sydney and the men's and women's teams from Emory & Henry. The first race will get underway at 2:00. Prior to the meet, the Vixens will honors senior swimmers Claire Zak and Sarah Cahoone.
