FREDERICKSBURG, Va. --- Day two at the ITA tournament hosted by Mary Washington University concluded on a high note for Mary Elise Dugan (Alexandria, Va./Chatham Hall). The first-year came back from a hard fought day one singles match defeat to upend conference foe Caitlin Hoerr of Hollins University and ultimately take a spot in the finals.
In the lower half of the Blue 6 Singles consolation bracket, teammate Yuliya Rigg '13 (Sweet Briar, Va./Amherst) walked through to a semi-final match up with another Old Dominion Athletic Conference competitor, Stephanie Bittner. Bittner of Virginia Wesleyan College moved on after an 8-1 win.
Meanwhile at the top of the bracket, Dugan squared off in the semis with Randolph-Macon College opponent Reba Sledd. Dugan held on for the 8-6 win and earned a berth in the final match with Bittner. Dugan was not able to seal the deal on her great first ITA run as a Vixen Tennis player. Bittner snagged the 9-7 win. Full results are available online.
Head Coach Teresa Boylan noted that the two-day tournament was good experience for her squad. She also added, "this is great progress for all participating Vixens."
After a week bye, the Vixen team travels to Norfolk, Va. to compete in the fall ODAC Individual Tournament on October 6 and 7 hosted on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College.
