ROANOKE, Va. --- Sweet Briar College began Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Hollins University on Friday afternoon. Due to weather, the match moved from the traditional nine-point tally to a decision format in which the first team to earn five points wins.
The host team jumped out of the gates winning all three doubles contests while collecting three points. Court three doubles partners Rachel Byrd (Hartfield, Va. / Mathews) and Allie Raifsnider (Concord, N.C. / Jay M. Robinson) nearly picked up a point for SBC, but the HU team of Cailin Hoerr (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and Tiffany Hodges (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) held on for the 8-6 win.
Hollins continued to cruise in singles action. HU recorded victories on courts one and three to take the match in a 5-0 decision.
Coach Boylan noted, "We competed against a solid Hollins lineup today, and while they won by decision I am pleased with the effort shown on all courts by our players. "
SBC next hosts Washington and Lee University on Sunday, March 3. The ODAC contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
