Dugan Goes the Distance, Takes Tennis to ODAC Victory

SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- On Friday, Sweet Briar College hosted Emory & Henry College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match. Sweet Briar set its sights on capturing another ODAC win, while EHC looked to collect its first league win of the spring season.  Sweet Briar got the result it wanted.

In the doubles competition, EHC took an 8-1 victory on court No. 1, but the SBC side was quick to counter with an 8-4 victory from the court No. 3 pairing of Rachel Byrd (Hartfield, Va./Mathews) and Allie Raifsnider (Concord, N.C./Jay M. Robinson).

The Vixen duo on court No. 2, Sarah Manter (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and Emma Merritt-Cuneo (Pacifica, Calif./Oceana), nearly earned the SBC squad another team point, but Emory & Henry's Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn./Halls) and Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va./Rural Retreat) came back from being down 4-5 to take the 8-6 win.

Sweet Briar began singles action down 2-1 in the team point count.

Emory & Henry jumped ahead in singles competition.  The Wasps picked up two wins on court Nos. 1 and 2.  Sweet Briar's Merritt-Cuneo answered with a court No. 4 victory (6-1, 6-0) and teammate Rachel Byrd also scored a win (6-1, 6-1) on court No. 5.

Yuliya Rigg (Sweet Briar, Va./Amherst) followed suit giving the home team another all important point to pull level with EHC at four-all.

Mary Elise Dugan (Alexandria, Va./ Chatham) went the distance with Emory & Henry's Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn./Hall).  The court No. 3 outcome determined the match winner.

Dugan dropped the first set 6-4, but the gritty first-year rallied to take the second set win (6-2).  With all other competitions complete, Dugan and Yeary battled through the third set.  Dugan dominated Yeary in the third (6-1) to earn the singles victory and clinch the ODAC win for Sweet Briar.

Post match, Head Vixen Tennis Coach Teresa Boylan commented that the "win was a total team effort."  With the victory, SBC picks up its second ODAC win of the season and improves to 5-9 overall.
