Tennis Wins Close Match Over Virginia Wesleyan

AMHERST, Va.- The Sweet Briar College tennis team picked up its first ODAC win of the season with a very tight match against Virginia Wesleyan College. The Vixens took advantage of a beautiful Sunday afternoon, winning 5-4.

The day started with SBC taking two-of-three doubles matches, winning on courts two and three. On court two, Samantha Yew and Emily Wandling picked up their seventh win together, downing Katie Staman and Aubree Johnson, 8-4. Des'rae Davis and Alexis Culley took down Abby Horgan and Jacklyn Cheely by the same scoreline on court three.

Wandling, Yew, and Davis carried their winning ways into singles play, where they each won their respective court. Wandling cruised past Staman on court two for her third conference singles victory of the season, and seventh win in her last ten matches, by a scoreline of 6-0, 6-1. 

Davis had a tighter match on court five against Horgan, but prevailed, 7-5, 6-4. The match was clinched by Yew on court four, where she took down Cheely, 7-6, 6-1. Yew has now won seven singles matches this season.

The Vixens returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to rival Hollins University for a crucial ODAC match. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
