DANVILLE, Va. — Sweet Briar senior AJ Lukanuski clinched a 5-4 victory for the Vixens in a non-conference match at Averett on Saturday afternoon.
The Vixens (5-6) fell behind in doubles action with the Cougars (6-7) taking two of the three matches in pairs action at the Averett Tennis Courts. Sweet Briar's lone point in doubles play came at No. 3, where the sophomore duo of Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.) and Lexi Culley (Louisa, Va.) fought for a tight 9-7 victory over Ashley Thornton and Tyler Goad of Averett.
Singles action saw victories for the Cougars at No. 1 and No. 3, inclding a win by Atlantic South Region No. 19 Hedi Sarkkinen at No. 1.
The Vixens rattled off three singles victories to tie the match at 4-4. Senior Samantha Yew (The Bronx, N.Y.) dominated with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory at No. 4, while Culley won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 against Goad. Tucker added to the Sweet Briar win total with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Thornton.
The decisive team point came at No. 2 singles as Lukanuski (Richmond, Va.) battled to a 6-4 victory in set one, before cruising to a 6-1 win in the second set to clinch her sixth victory of the season.
Yew joined Lukanuski in earning her sixth singles victory of the season, second most on the team behind sophmore Emily Wandling's (Mechanicsville, Va.) eight victories.
Next on the 2018 slate for the Vixens is an April 3rd meeting with the Knights of Southern Virginia at 4 p.m.
