Sweet Briar Soccer Makes It Two in a Row

Box Score

Sweet Briar Remains Undefeated

SWEET BRIAR, Va.  --- Marissa McCord (Ashville, N.C./T.C. Roberson) scored twice to lead Vixen Soccer past Christendom College (Front Royal, Va.) on Saturday afternoon.  First-years Kayla Kishbaugh (Effort, Pa./ Pleasant Valley), Alicia Wooten (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), and Grayson Murphy (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) also found the back of the net en route to the 6-0 Vixen win.

Kishbaugh opened scoring just inside seven minutes when she took advantage of an open goal and calmly netted the ball.  Two minutes later the Vixen strikers forced an own goal to take a 2-0 lead over the Crusaders.  SBC generated a number of scoring opportunities and pushed the pace through the rest of the half, yet the score remained 2-0 heading into intermission.

Emily Spivey (Dillwyn, Va./Buckingham) connected with McCord to give SBC a three goal advantage 11 minutes into the second period.  Spivey knocked a long ball from the right sideline that found McCord in the middle of the field just outside the 18 yard box.  McCord turned and deftly placed the ball past the Christendom keeper.

Under a minute later Sweet Briar struck again.  This time Alicia Wooten knocked home a Emily Welch rebound to give the home team 4-0 lead.  A few minutes later, McCord sent in a cross from the left side that hooked inside the far post for SBC's fifth score of the afternoon.

The Vixen side continued to work the ball around, choosing their strikes with ease.  With time counting down, Grayson Murphy capitalized on a 1 v. 1 with the keeper to give Sweet Briar its sixth a finally tally.  Murphy's score, her fourth on the season, places her atop the points leader board for SBC (10).

For the game, SBC outshot the Crusaders 14-1.  Vixen keepers Kat Day (Clifton Forge, Va./James River) and Katie Tillson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) divided goaltending duties.  Day made the start and did not face a shot.  Tillson came on in the second and turned away the Crusader's lone shot to keep the shutout in order.  Christendom's Anna Frost made two saves in goal.

The Vixen Soccer record improves to 2-0-1 while the Crusaders fall to 0-4 on the season.

On Wednesday, September 18, SBC entertains Emory & Henry College on Babcock Field.  The match with Wasps kicks off the Old Dominion Athletic Conference portion of the 2013 schedule.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
