Box Score Despite another solid defensive effort, the Sweet Briar soccer team was eliminated from ODAC playoff contention with a 2-0 home loss to Bridgewater on Saturday.
It was Homecoming weekend for Sweet Briar, and Senior Day for three Vixens- Kelsey Barta, Jax Bullett and Marissa McCord.
Junior Kat Day had a second straight double-digit save performance in goal, stopping 12 of 14 shots on target and making several breakaway saves.
While the Vixens were organized at the back throughout, Bridgewater was able to beat the offsides trap on several occasions to get in behind.
Senior Mari Marotta tapped in the rebound after Day saved Paxton Sauerwald, but she was flagged for offsides. Less than a minute later, she was onside on a through ball from Nikole Blackwell and had plenty of time to put the opening goal home.
Marotta was nearly in again late in the first half, but the offsides flag was up this time. Day kept the deficit at 1-0 with a big breakway stop on Sauerwald in the 43rd minute.
Bridgewater went ahead 2-0 when Michelle Viegas got in behind and had all the time in the world; Day made an unbelievable save on her first point-blank attempt but the rebound fell right back to the junior to put away.
Sarah Brennan went in on another breakaway in the 69th minute. Day saved the shot and then dove back to cover on the goalline when the ball squirmed behind her.
Bullett stole a pass and nearly broke behind the Eagles defense in the final 10 minutes, but Amber O'Connor got back to stop the chance.
Sweet Briar falls to 6-8, 3-8 as Eastern Mennonite or Emory & Henry clinches the eighth and final ODAC playoff spot. Bridgewater improves to 14-3, 9-2.
