Box Score The Sweet Briar College soccer team got its 2014 campaign off to a great start, beating William Peace College 3-0 on the road Friday night.
First-years and sophomores contributed all of SBC's points, including a two-goal, one-assist performance from rookie Patricia Garrett in her first-ever collegiate game.
Sophomore Kayla Kishbaugh also scored, while classmate Emily Welch assisted on the final tally of the day. First-year Stephanie Scott added an assist.
The Vixens led 1-0 at halftime. Junior Ashley Federico held the ball up well and fed Scott on an overlap. Garrett beat the Pacer goalkeeper to Scott's cross to open the scoring.
Kishbaugh made it 2-0 in the second half, finishing off a cross from Garrett at the back post.
Freshman Leyte McNealus started the buildup on SBC's third goal, with Welch finally laying the ball back to Garrett for the finish.
"It was great to get three goals, but we've worked hard on how to defend as a team and this shows a lot about our mentality as we work through our non-conference schedule," said Sweet Briar head coach Kevin Fabulich.
Junior Katie Tillson kept the shutout in goal, with an organized Vixen defense never really allowing the hosts to threaten.
Sweet Briar improved on last season's result vs. Peace, when the Vixens tied 3-3 at home.
SBC also had several key players back from injury issues in 2013. Senior defensive midfielder Marissa McCord played most of the game, while midfielder Alicia Wooten went the full 90 minutes.
Sweet Briar (1-0) will travel to Christendom on Saturday, Sept. 6.
