Soccer Shuts Out Trinity Washington, 3-0

Box Score

Patricia Garrett scored directly off a corner kick as the Sweet Briar College soccer team defeated Trinity Washington 3-0 in the Vixens' home opener on Wednesday.

In the 87th minute, Garrett curled a corner that went behind the goalkeeper and into the net to cap the scoring.

Sweet Briar dominated possession and peppered the Trinity goal with 38 shots, including 17 on targert and five others that hit the posts or were cleared off the line by a defender.

Trinity goalie Eboni Hibbert finished with 14 saves, while Sweet Briar's Katie Tillson earned her second shutout of the year.

The Vixens took the lead in the fourth minute. After a nice combination between Kaila Beale and Kayla Kishbaugh, Kishbaugh crossed to a wide-open Ashley Federico at the back post for the opening goal.

Sweet Briar had chances throughout the first half but struggled to finish. Kishbaugh couldn't get on the end of a dangerous cross from Federico 10 minutes in, and later forced a good save after beating the defense to a ball over the top.

Trinity also cleared three shots off the line in the first half. Stephanie Scott had two consecutive chances headed away off a corner kick, with the goalkeeper out of the play. Soon after, another Kishbaugh shot was saved and Emily Welch's rebound was stopped on the line by Tiger defender Claudia Merlos.

The Vixens doubled their lead in the 23rd minute, as Welch stole a poor goal kick and put it away for a 2-0 scoreline.

Trinity's Asya Tucker had a few long range efforts on goal that were caught by Katie Tillson, but otherwise the guests did not threaten.

Off a free kick in the opening minute of the second off, Federico volleyed a shot that dipped just inches over the crossbar. Minutes later, she shot just high again from 25 yards out.

Beale played dangerous through balls to both Kishbaugh and Garrett in the second half, but Hibbert came out to stop both opportunities.

The Vixens hit the woodwork twice just six seconds apart in the 85th minute, with Federico hitting the crossbar and Kishbaugh hooking her rebound off the far post.

Sweet Briar improves to 3-0 on the season and will look to continue its perfect start on Saturday at Hollins, in the Vixens' ODAC opener. Trinity Washington falls to 0-2 on the year.
