Hornets Hand Soccer First Loss of Season, 5-1

Box Score

Shenandoah pulled away in the second half as the Sweet Briar College soccer team lost for the first time in 2014, 5-1 on the road Saturday.

First-year Leyte McNealus scored on the Vixens' first shot of the game, in the 43rd minute, to keep Sweet Briar within a goal heading into halftime.

The Hornets got a hat trick from Danielle Burris however, as she scored in the 47th and 57th minutes to put Shenandoah up 4-1.

Just 62 seconds into the second half, Burris struck unassisted on the first chance of the period to make it 3-1.

Burris also set up the final goal of the game, passing to Kati Richardson who found Alysha McCleaf for Shenandoah's fifth of the day.

Shenandoah had opened the scoring on the first shot of the game, with Elizabeth Bellido finishing off McCleaf's assist in the third minute.

Sweet Briar held the Hornets without a shot for the final 14 minutes of the first half and appeared to have some momentum, but gave up the dagger goal right after the second half restart.

Junior Katie Tillson made nine saves for Sweet Briar in her first losing effort of the season.

Shenandoah used three goalkeepers on the day, as Rebecca Angerome was forced to fill in for Erin Septer midway through the first half. Nicole Pratt then played the second half for the hosts.

Sweet Briar falls to 4-1, 1-1 ODAC, and will travel to 2013 conference finalist Washington and Lee on Wednesday. Shenandoah is 2-5-1, 2-0.
