Soccer Drops Season Opener

Box Score

Sweet Briar, VA- The Sweet Briar College soccer team couldn't contain the Christendom College Crusaders on Saturday afternoon, as they fell 3-0.

This was the Vixens season opener at Babcock Field, featuring a young Vixens squad under the direction of first year Head Coach Amy Dahlin.

The Vixens jumped out to a good start as junior striker Des'rae Davis had two shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes, before the Crusaders were able to mount any attack. But that changed quickly when in the 12th minute of play, the Crusaders caught the Vixens in transition and Bryn Burgess registered the games first goal.

Mary Grace Handy netted her first of two goals with just over a minute to play in the first half to give the Crusaders a two-goal cushion. Her second goal would come less than 10 minutes into the second half to solidify the final score.

Despite the score line, the Vixens defensive backline held strong throughout the game, pulling the Crusaders offside eight times. Between the pipes, senior Katie Tillson finished with seven saves and faced 17 total shots.

Davis led the day offensively for the Vixens, registering three of the team's five shots.

The Vixens (0-1) will play a doubleheader next weekend when they face off with Trinity University on Friday afternoon and then the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday.
