Soccer Opens Season At Home Against William Peace

Box Score

SWEET BRIAR, Va.- The Sweet Briar College soccer team opened its 2017 campaign with a home tilt against William Peace University. Battling cold and rainy weather for the duration of the match, the visiting Pacers came away with a 1-0 victory.

The Pacers gained the lead in the 41st minute of the first half when Katie Hodges took control of a turnover in the box and curled a shot passed Caroline Thomas.

William Peace held an edge in shots, 10-7, with SBC registering five during the second as the comeback effort fell just short. Peace keeper Yaqueline Yanez finished with five saves in the match, compared to four from Thomas.

SBC did hold an edge in corner kick opportunities, 5-2, with first-year Lera Cordner taking all the attempts. A few of her efforts found her teammates, but their shots were unable to navigate the crowded box.

Cordner also led the Vixens with three shots, all on goal. Fellow first-year Catherine Ford also tallied two shots, with one on frame.

The Vixens will return to action at home tomorrow when they host Wesleyan (Ga.) College. The match is scheduled for a noon kickoff.
