Eagles top Vixens; Meyer matches career best saves

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Sweet Briar held the reigning ODAC regular season champions, Bridgewater, to one goal in the opening half of Wednesday's conference match-up at the Sweet Briar Soccer Field, before a multi-goal second half saw the Eagles leave with a 6-0 road victory.

Bridgewater (5-5-2, 1-2-0 ODAC) spent the opening 25 minutes of play trying to unlock an organized Sweet Briar (0-9-0, 0-3-0) defense. At the back of the Vixens' defense was first-year goalkeeper Katelyn Meyer (Smithsburg, Md.), who recorded six saves in the opening 25 minutes of action.

It was not until the 28th minute that the Eagles were able to breakthrough with Catherine Haufe tallying the opening goal of the day.

Haufe's goal was followed by another impressive 17 minutes of action by the Sweet Briar defense and Meyer. In goal, Meyer tallied six additional saves before the opening half expired, including four from point-blank range off Sydney Ryan headers.

Period two leaned Bridgewater's way with Ryan sneaking a header into the back of the net in the 47th minute.

With the Eagles leading 3-0 heading into the final 20 minutes of play, Bridgewater notched three goals over a three-minute span to earn a 6-0 win on the road.

The second half saw Meyer stop six shots, finishing the day with 18 saves. Meyer's 18 saves ties her career-high against Piedmont International on September 21.

Junior Lera Cordner (Macungie, Pa.) took Sweet Briar's lone shot on the day, putting her effort wide of the frame in the opening half.

The Vixens return to ODAC action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. home match against Washington and Lee. The Generals come to Sweet Briar ranked No. 16 in the D3Soccer.com Women's Top 25 and listed in the receiving votes section of the latest United Soccer Coaches' Women's Top 25.
