SWEET BRIAR, Va. — First-year Kass Carpenter and sophomore Peyton Murphy both picked up event victories on the afternoon, as Sweet Briar opened the 2020-21 swim season on Saturday with a 134-64 loss to Southern Virginia inside the Prothro Natatorium.

Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.) won her first collegiate event with a 10:55.75 in the 800-meter freestyle, finishing nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second finisher in the heat.

The 200-meter individual medley saw Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) earn her first victory of the season when she touched the wall with a personal best time of 2:46.66.

Carpenter finished second in the 100-meter backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:15.73. Murphy's second-place finish came in the 400-meter freestyle, where she touched at 5:29.55, a personal best.

Murphy was not the only Sweet Briar (0-1) swimmer with personal bests on the day, as junior Lizzie Martin (Dothan, Ala.) finished the day with three personal best swims. Martin touched at 2:48.92 in the 200-meter freestyle, 1:29.39 in the 100-meter backstroke and 1:35.16 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Junior Lauren Jones (Danville, Va.) touched the wall with a personal best of 1:21.41 in the 100-meter freestyle, while senior Nora Florio (Lynchburg, Va.) recorded a personal best of 1:52.92 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Three Vixens made their collegiate debut on Saturday with first-years Devin Montgomery (San Antonio, Texas) and Elyse Samassekou (Huntington, W.Va.) joining Carpenter as debutants.

Sweet Briar is scheduled to compete again on Friday, February 5 in a tri-meet against Lynchburg and Roanoke, as Lynchburg hosts at the Liberty University Natatorium at 7 p.m.
