ROANOKE, Va. – The Sweet Briar College swim team (2-4) split its second-straight tri-meet with a 338-195 win over the Guilford College Quakers (1-3) and a 442-318 loss to Hollins University (2-3) this afternoon.
The Vixens started the meet off with a second-place finish in 200-yard medley relay as senior
Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.), juniors
Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) and
Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) and first-year
Ella Scherrer (Simpsonville, S.C.) combined for a time of 2:15.71.
Carpenter and Aparicio finished first and second in the 1000-yard freestyle with times of 12:23.90 and 13:25.66, respectively.
In the 100-yard backstroke, junior
Viya Atambayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was the lone Sweet Briar representative and finished fourth with a time of 1:51.92.
Lewis captured the team's second victory of the day in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.07 while Scherrer placed third after touching the wall at the 1:33.24 mark.
Aparicio's second runner-up finish on the day came in the 50-yard freestyle thanks to her time of 31:56. Atambayeva came sixth in the event with a time of 44.30.
Immediately following, in the 100-yard freestyle, first-year
Abby Place (Lynchburg, Va.) captured her first collegiate victory with a time of 1:11.64 while Atambayeva recorded a time of 1:40.11 to place fifth.
The Vixens earned victories in the next three events thanks to Carpenter, Lewis and Scherrer recording times of 2:31.03, 2:51.22 and 7:08.72 in the 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle, respectively.
In the final individual race of the day, Lewis totaled a time of 2:41.25 to place second in the 400-yard freestyle.
Action at Hollins wrapped up with Sweet Briar's second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle. Carpenter, Scherrer, Place and ElzHowe combined for a time of 5:05.41.
