Soccer Closes Out Season Against UC Santa Cruz

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-9-1) closed out the 2023 season with a 10-0 loss to the University of California, Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (11-4-2, 0-0-0 C2C) in the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
 
After a scoreless five minutes to start the game, the Banana Slugs got on the board at the 5:22 mark.
 
In the next ten minutes of play the visiting team would add two more goals to their total.
 
Additional tallies at 19:39 and 23:58 would give UC Santa Cruz the 5-0 lead entering halftime.
 
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Banana Slugs would increase their lead to six with an additional goal at 66:17 bringing the score to 7-0.
 
A tally less than two minutes later, followed by a final goal in the 80th minute would bring the game to its eventual 10-0 close.

  • Junior goalkeeper Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) recorded 10 saves.
  • Fellow junior Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) led the team with three shots on goal while first-year Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) totaled three shots.
 
What's Next
The Vixens will now look ahead to the 2024 season and their return to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).
