NORFOLK, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (0-1, 0-0 ODAC) fell to the Regent University Royals (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NCCAA) this evening by a score of 1-0 in the season opener.
The two teams deadlocked at zero through the entire first half of the match with Sweet Briar's lone shot coming from sophomore
Victoria Schofield (Towson, Md.) at the 30th minute of play.
Both teams began to find their offensive footing at the start of the second half as both first-year
Electra Mcpherson (Madison Heights, Va.) and sophomore
Emily Michel (Centennial, Colo.) forced the Regent goalkeeper to make saves to keep the game scoreless.
Half-way through the second half, the Royals got themselves on the board to take the 1-0 lead.
The rest of the game went scoreless to give the home team the 1-0 victory.
In goal, senior
Trista Cleaves (Millville, N.J.) recorded six saves through 90 minutes of action.
Highlights
- First-years Yadira Castrejon (Connelly Springs, N.C.), Kaelin Hanson (Los Alamos, N.M.), Maddie Ickes (Powhatan, Va.), Mcpherson and Grady O'Donnell (Richmond, Va.) all saw action in their first collegiate game.
- Today's one-goal match against Regent marks the closest game ever contested by the two programs.
