Soccer Stopped by Averett

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (4-10-0, 0-9-0 ODAC) battled it out against the Averett University Cougars (3-10-1, 2-6-0) this evening, falling by a score of 2-0.

The opening half saw Sweet Briar matching Averett's intensity, with each team generating a substantial number of scoring opportunities. Sweet Briar produced 12 shots, with four on target, consistently applying pressure on Averett's defense. Junior Emily Michel (Centennial, Colo.) led the attacking efforts, recording multiple shots and forcing critical saves from the opposing goalkeeper. Fellow junior Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) also contributed significantly, challenging the defense and getting several goal attempts. Junior Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) anchored Sweet Briar in goal, making a series of crucial saves; she had eight in the first half, keeping her team within reach until Averett found the breakthrough. The lone goal of the half came in the 11th minute, giving the visitors a narrow 1-0 lead at halftime.

After the break, Sweet Briar maintained its attacking momentum with another 12 shots, continuing to push for an equalizer. Michel and Diaz again stood out offensively with persistent efforts, while junior Elise Bennett (Louisa, Va.) and first-year Charity Tynes (Midlothian, Va.) added fresh energy to the attack, attempting to break through Averett's back line. In goal, Viccora remained steadfast, making eight additional saves to finish with a total of 16 for the match. Despite these efforts, Averett doubled their lead in the 55th minute. Sweet Briar athletes never relented, with notable defensive contributions from sophomore Kaelin Hanson (Los Alamos, N.M.) and first-year Abby Broom (Sylva, N.C.), who helped limit further opportunities for Averett.
