Soccer Faces Tough Road Clash with Warren Wilson

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Sweet Briar College soccer team (2-1, 0-0 ODAC) faced a tough matchup on the road this afternoon against the Warren Wilson College Owls (1-2-1, 0-0 C2C). The Vixens fell to the Owls by a score of 2-1, with a late goal from the home team sealing the victory.

Warren Wilson controlled the majority of possession in the opening 45 minutes of play, outshooting the Vixens eight to four. Sweet Briar goalkeeper junior Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) was busy early, making key saves on key attempts from Warren Wilson. The only goal of the half came in the 16th minute, when Warren Wilson capitalized on an opportunity to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Sweet Briar regrouped at halftime and returned with renewed purpose. The Vixens started to control more of the play, reversing the shot count and putting the Owls under sustained pressure. The turning point for Sweet Briar came in the 72nd minute. Junior Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) leveled the game with an unassisted goal, her second of the season, as Sweet Briar finally broke through Warren Wilson's defense.

With the score tied, the game grew tense and physical, but the Vixens continued pushing forward. Warren Wilson, however, capitalized on a critical moment in the 87th minute when a converted a penalty kick, put the home side ahead 2-1. Despite a final push and five total shots in the half, Sweet Briar could not find another equalizer.

Highlights
  • Diaz led the team in both shots and shots on goal.
  • Sophomores Yadira Casterjon (Connelly Springs, N.C.) and Electra McPherson (Madison Heights, Va.) and first-year Sadie Swart (Bowie, Md.) also contributed to Sweet Briar's shots total.
