ASHLAND, Va. - The Sweet Briar College soccer team (0-7-3, 0-5-0 ODAC) fell to the Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets (3-5-2, 2-2-0 ODAC), 4-0, this evening.
Goalkeepers first-year
Arianna Nguyen (Egg Harbor Township) and junior
Kylee Nickerson (Waterford, Mich.) combined for 15 saves, while seniors
Alexis Diaz (Connelly Springs, N.C.) and
Mia Viccora (Fairfax, Va.) accounted for the Vixens' three shots.
Randolph-Macon applied pressure early, hitting the crossbar in the opening minute before Nguyen recorded her first save at the 1:08 mark. The hosts took a 1-0 lead on a goal at 3:15, but Nguyen answered with stops in the fifth and seventh minutes to keep Sweet Briar within one.
Diaz registered the Vixens' first shot at 8:43. Nguyen continued to anchor Sweet Briar's defensive effort, turning away attempts as the first half progressed.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 2-0 at 33:11. Sweet Briar challenged at the other end less than three minutes later, with Viccora putting a shot on target that the Randolph-Macon goalkeeper saved at 36:02. Nguyen added two more stops before halftime, finishing the opening period with eight saves.
Nguyen opened the second half by denying a Yellow Jackets chance at 45:39 before Nickerson entered at 46:08. Nguyen finished her outing with nine saves in 46:08 of action. Nickerson made her first stop at 47:28.
Randolph-Macon pushed its advantage to 3-0 at 48:09. Nickerson followed with two saves before Gim the hosts scored their final goal at 52:03.
Nickerson kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match, recording additional saves. Diaz supplied Sweet Briar's final scoring opportunity at 81:58, directing a shot on goal that was saved. Nickerson capped her six-save performance by stopping a final attempt at 86:07.
