EMU Blanks Sweet Briar in Tuesday Afternoon Tilt

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Three Royals scored as Eastern Mennonite University handed Sweet Briar College a 4-0 road-loss Tuesday afternoon at the EMU turf field.   The Royals, still riding high after their season's first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win on Saturday, looked to extend their streak, while the Vixens were on the hunt for their first ODAC win.

Midway through the first half after several Royals attempts hit everywhere except the back of the net, EMU goals leader Taylor Wenger ('14/New Holland, Pa.) slipped a shot past Seanne Weekes  ('12/San Jose, Calif.) for EMU's first score.  The Royals, who have now posted two consecutive ODAC shutouts, would not look back.

Later in the period, first-year Vixen striker Emily Spivey  (Dillwyn, Va.) broke free for a tango with EMU keeper Jenni Beck (Archbold, Ohio), but the sophomore goalie made the save, giving the Royals a 1-0 advantage at intermission.  Michelle Miller ('13/Sarasota, Fla.) opened second half scoring for the Royals off an assist from Rachel Kennel ('14/Parkesburg, Pa.) in the 53rd minute.

Wenger then tallied her second score of the game at the 68:24 mark, pushing the EMU lead to three goals.  With time fast expiring for Sweet Briar College, the Vixens once more tested Beck, this time off a set piece.  Beck warded off Alison Lifka's ('13/Asheville, N.C.) shot to preserve the shutout.

In the waning minutes of the contest, Lifka was awarded a penalty in the box on a hard tackle.  The Royals summoned Kennel to take the penalty kick, which she knocked home for the game's final goal, giving EMU the 4-0 shutout win.

Coach Fabulich commented post game that his Vixen squad defended better than they have in recent outings and he is "happy with the direction the team is now moving."

Tuesday's loss drops the SBC record to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.  The Vixens return to Babcock Field on Saturday, October 8 for a 2 p.m. conference match against Randolph College.
