Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Vixen Soccer hosted
Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon at Babcock Field.
Although the Eagles held the edge in time of possession, Sweet
Briar dictated much of the pace of play. Despite
slowing down the Eagles, SBC was not able to score and the visitors
prevailed 4-0.
After smacking a shot off the crossbar in the 12th
minute, the Eagles found the back of the net three minutes later on
an unassisted score by Krissy Snyder (Eden, N.C./Morehead).
As the half carried on with neither team grabbing control, Sweet
Briar generated a corner kick at the 32:41 mark. Ali Lifka
(Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson) lofted a ball into the BC box, but no
Vixen connected.
Several minutes later, the Eagles answered with an attack.
In the 35th minute Jacey Kelly (Newburg,
Pa./Shippensburg) glanced a shot off SBC keeper Katherine
Tillson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee). Eagle teammate Michelle
Viegas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) finished the rebound for the game's
second goal.
Two minutes later, Kelly tallied a goal to go wih her assist
when she knocked home a deflected Mari Marotta (Clifton,
Va./Centreville) shot. The teams entered halftime with the
Eagles up 3-0.
The second frame began in a similar fashion as the first with
neither team able to push the pace. Under ten minutes into
the period, Marissa
McCord (Asheville, N.C./T.C. Roberson) collected a Katherine
Day (Clifton Forge, Va./James River) throw-in and fired a
long-range shot to start up the SBC offense, but keeper Taylor
Riley (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) was equal to the task.
Nearly halfway through the period, McCord and Lynn Lunde
(Dallas, Tex./Creekview) created a beauty of a scoring
opportunity. McCord blasted a cross-field pass to a streaking
Lunde on the right flank. Lunde, noticing the BC keeper on
her near post, sent in a far post shot, but BC defender Erin Holden
(Herndon, Va./Oakton) swept the shot off the line to prevent the
score.
Three minutes later the Eagles answered the Vixen attack with
another unassisted Snyder score. The goal capped scoring to
make the final result 4-0 in favor of the Eagles.
Sweet Briar next faces Hollins University on Saturday, October
13. The conference match is set for a 3 p.m. kickoff on the
Hollins campus in Roanoke, Va.
