Vixens Fall 5-0 to Roanoke at Amherst High

Box Score

A shorthanded Sweet Briar soccer team couldn't keep up with Roanoke College on Wednesday, losing 5-0 at home.

The game was played on the turf at Amherst High School, after rain over the past two days threatened the availability of Babcock Field.

The Vixens had just 13 players dressed and the injured list featured four of the team's most important contributors this season.

Junior midfielder Kat Day made 10 saves in goal for the Vixens. Senior Jax Bullett moved into a starting outside back spot, and first-year Bridgett Burg made her first collegiate appearance for SBC.

Roanoke took a 3-0 lead within 19 minutes. Emily Whitaker slipped in a pass from Ashley Barnes on the game's first chance to put Sweet Briar in an early hole.

Barnes was involved in the second goal as well, passing out wide to Whitaker, with Marlana Barnard finishing off the play from close range.

Taylor Sayegh's long cross in the 19th minute fell to Whitaker, who popped a shot over Day for her second of the day.

Barnard took a short corner early in the first half and fired a shot that went straight at Day.

Day made a save on Linnea Kramer right after the third goal and Roanoke was offsides going after the rebound. The Maroons were offsides on another scoring chance as a dangerous shot hit a Roanoke player laying behind the defensive line.

The Vixens started to get forward more early in the second half, but Roanoke's Nathalie Torres soon ran onto a long ball from defender Shannon Dishaw and scored for a 4-0 Maroon advantage.

The Vixens earned a corner kick in the 67th minute and defender Jaden Nichols got off two shots but neither found the target. Another Nichols shot on a corner kick two minutes later was also blocked.

A late own goal gave Roanoke its final 5-0 scoreline.

Sweet Briar falls to 6-5, 3-5 ODAC, a game behind Roanoke (8-6, 4-4) in the league standings. The Vixens face a must-win road trip to Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere in the conference, Randolph-Macon defeated Randolph College 2-1 to move to 4-4 in ODAC play. The Vixens currently sit in ninth place, a half-game behind 3-4 Eastern Mennonite. EMU's scheduled game at Virginia Wesleyan was postponed to next week.
