STAUNTON, Va.- Two first half goals led the Sweet Briar College soccer team to its first win of the season as they downed Mary Baldwin University, 2-0.

It took just under two minutes for Des'rae Davis to find Jona Cumani on a breakaway and for the sophomore to net her second career goal. For the senior Davis, it's the fourth assist of her Vixen career.

Sophomore Elizabeth Phaup netted the second goal for Sweet Briar off a pass from first-year Lacey Tucker. This is the first collegiate goal for the Amherst native and the first assist for Tucker.

Mary Baldwin had a chance to get one back early in the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick. Mayzie Lewis took the shot for the Fighting Squirrels, but Vixen keeper Caroline Thomas saved the penalty attempt for one of her six saves of the match. This game marks Thomas' first collegiate win and shutout.

For head coach Amy Dahlin, this win marks the first victory of her collegiate coaching career. Dahlin, who served as an assistant coach for the Vixens from 2011-2013, came close to winning a few times in her first season at the helm, but was never able to get over the hump.

Cumani led Sweet Briar with three shots, all of which were on frame. Alexa Dahlin registered four shots, but only one attempt was a shot on goal. Both Tucker and Leyte McNealus tallied two shots on goal in the match.

Overall, the Vixens outshot Mary Baldwin, 15-8, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Sweet Briar also earned seven corner kicks and held the Fighting Squirrels without a corner opportunity.

The Vixens will carry their winning momentum into their conference opener on Saturday with they travel to Emory & Henry College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
