FERRUM, Va. — Junior Alexis Jones scored her seventh goal of the season as the Vixens picked up a 1-0 road victory over Ferrum in Sweet Briar's season finale.
Following a scoreless opening period, Sweet Briar (6-7) got the game-winner into the back of the goal in the 27th minute of play as Jones (Suffolk, Va.) tallied her seventh score of the season.
The first save of the day for either goalkeeper came in the 45th minute when Sweet Briar sophomore Ingrid Stacia (Richmond, Va.) saw her shot saved by Ferrum's (2-14) Mia Holmes.
Needing a strong defensive performance in the fourth period to secure the shutout victory, the Vixens continued a strong showing in the midfield and defense, holding the Panthers to just one shot following Jones' goal.
On the offensive end, Sweet Briar wrapped up the game with four shots in the final period. Sophomore Maggie Groetsch (Asheville, N.C.) and first-year Nadia Bass (Virginia Beach, Va.) saw tries blocked, while first-year Colleen Goodly (Yorktown, Va.) saw one shot saved by a Ferrum defender and had a second blocked.
Goodly's blocked shot was the last action of the game as the Vixens left Ferrum with a 1-0 win over the Panthers.
Sweet Briar's victory over Ferrum was the first for the Vixens over the Panthers since October 11, 2014. The Vixens' win in 2014 was a 3-0 victory at Ferrum.
Jones' seventh goal of the season, marks the most by a Vixen since the 2009 season that saw Linday Eneguess finish the year with seven goals of her own.
