Meyer stops nine in Vixens' loss to Fighting Squirrels

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Five shots on goal and 11 saves highlighted the Vixens' soccer season opener on Friday evening, as Sweet Briar dropped a 5-0 decision at home to Mary Baldwin.

Following a scoreless opening half, the Fighting Squirrels (1-0-0) broke open the scoring in the 64th minute when Elena Guy scored off an assist from Julissa Gamboa. Guy struck a second time in the 69th, before an own goal took the score line to 3-0. Annie Ammons and Makayla Taylor rounded out the scoring for Mary Baldwin.

The Vixens (0-1-0) threatened in the 14th when a shot from junior Lera Cordner (Macungie, Pa.) was saved by Mary Baldwin's Anyka Wilkin. A second Wilkin save came in the 35th on a shot by senior Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.).

Cordner called Wilkin into action a second time in the 63rd minute, before first-year Olivia Peete (Oakton, Va.) saw her shot in the 66th minute parried away. Peete put the Vixens' final shot on goal of the game in the 81st minute when she looked to find the upper 90 on her final shot of the day.

On the other end of the pitch, first-year Katelyn Meyer (Smithsburg, Md.) tallied nine saves in 75 minutes of action before junior Sammy Holton (Arbutus, Md.) made two saves in a relief appearance.

Four Vixens made their collegiate soccer debut in the starting lineup, including senior Victoria Lawson (Shipman, Va.). Joining Lawson as debutants in the Vixens' starting 11 was Meyer, Peete and first-year Cecile Fuselier (New Orleans, La.).

Also making their collegiate debut were first-years Carmen Collins (Breckenridge, Mich.) and Maddie Wine (Stafford, Va.).

The Vixens hit the road for their first road match of the season on September 4 as Sweet Briar heads to Notre Dame (Md.) for a 4 p.m. kickoff in Baltimore, Md.
