Vixens cruise to 8-1 win over Quakers

GREENSBORO, N.C. — First-year Kate Kotany clinched Sweet Briar's first ODAC victory since 2018 as the Vixens cruised to an 8-1 victory over Guilford at the McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts on Saturday afternoon.

In the first dual match of the year for Sweet Briar (1-0, 1-0 ODAC), the Vixens avenged a 5-4 loss in 2019 to the Quakers (2-3, 1-1 ODAC) by pouncing on Guilford off the first serve in doubles play.

In pairs action, first-year Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and senior Emily Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) led things off at No. 1 with an 8-1 win over Madyson Schreiber and Delaney Taylor).

The second point for the Vixens came at No. 3 doubles, where first-year Riahn Holcomb (Wheaton, Ill.) made her collegiate debut in an 8-2 win over Abby Boohar and Megan Kimpel with her partner, senior, Lacey Tucker (Swansboro, N.C.).

Sweet Briar finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2 by Kotany (Erd, Hungary) and first-year Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) over Hannah Pardue and Hannah Arnett.

Singles action got underway with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 performance from Emily Wandling over Taylor at No. 3 singles and a match-clinching 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 by Kotany over Arnett.

No. 2 singles saw an impressive ODAC debut from Allison Wandling in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Pardue.

At No. 1 singles, de Souza earned a straight-sets victory over Schreiber 6-1, 6-2.

Sweet Briar's final victory came at No. 5 singles where Tucker bounced back from a first-set loss to win in three sets over Boohar 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).

Sweet Briar's victory was the first for the Vixens since an 8-1 win over Mary Baldwin on March 20, 2019, and first in ODAC play since a 5-1 win over Shenandoah on April 24, 2018.

The Vixens make their home dual debut on Wednesday, March 4, with a doubleheader scheduled against Trinity Washington (2 p.m.) and No. 23 Washington & Lee (4:30 p.m.) at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center.
