Serrano's return-to-ride concussion management policy published in CLIN AT

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Sweet Briar College Director of Sports Medicine Devon Serrano, DAT, LAT, ATC, NREMT, recently had her policy Implementation of a Novel Return-to-Ride Concussion Management Policy for Collegiate Hunter/Jumper Equestrian Athletes published in the journal, Clinical Practice in Athletic Training.

Serrano spent the past four years researching and developing the policy and protocols alongside former Sweet Briar Team Physician, Velyn Wu, MD.

The policy is a concussion return-to-participation policy specific to the sport of equestrian, based on collaboration between the Sweet Briar Sports Medicine staff and the riding center staff at the college while referencing concussion management research and policies provided by the Sport Science Institute of the NCAA along with additional sources beyond the NCAA and other governing bodies of sports.

The purpose of the policy is to provide athletic trainers and other healthcare providers with an insight on the creation of a concussion return to participation guide for equestrian student-athletes.

Serrano is the Young Professionals Chair for the Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association and is the co-founder of the Equestrian Athletic Trainers' Network.

Serrano's policy is included in Clinical Practice in Athletic Training, Volume 3 - Issue 2.
