Soccer Comes Up Short Against Bridgewater

SWEET BRIAR, Va. Sweet Briar soccer (2-3-0, 0-2-0 ODAC) came up just short in its ODAC contest against the Bridgewater Eagles (8-1-1, 1-0-1 ODAC), falling 4-1.

The Vixens got out to a quick 1-0 lead with first-year Kaitlyn Burns (Moneta, Va.)  sending the ball over the Eagles goalkeeper two minutes into the match.

Sweet Briar would take the 1-0 lead into the half, holding Bridgewater scoreless on 13 shots in the first. "Anytime you can take the reigning champions to halftime with a lead, you're doing a few things well," remarked head coach Jason Capps.

However, the Eagles would mount a comeback in the second half of play, scoring four goals to take the eventual 4-1 victory.

On the entirety of the match and the team's play Capps stated, "We were shorthanded, and our team has dealt with a lot this season, so while we are not satisfied in the least with the result we are extremely proud of the fight we showed today to stay in the points with someone as talented as the #7 team in the region until the 76th minute and we are looking forward to what we are continuing to build here".

Highlights
  • Burns' goal marks the first goal that Sweet Briar has scored on Bridgewater since the 2008 season.
  • Sweet Briar's 1-0 lead at the half was the first time has lead at the half since at least the 2004 season.
  • Junior goalkeeper Katelyn Meyer's (Smithsburg, Md.) 10 saves are the second-highest save total for her this season.
