MAHWAH, N.J. – Sweet Briar field hockey (13-9, 4-3 CSAC) gained its first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Field Hockey Championship experience against the Ramapo Roadrunners (13-7, 3-3) today, falling by a score of 5-0.
The experienced Roadrunners took a quick 2-0 lead ten minutes into the match. A save by senior goalkeeper
Janie Bolling (Hereford, Md.) dampened Ramapo's momentum allowing the game to even out later in the first and into the second.
During the second quarter, first-year goalkeeper
Ashley Maggiora (Hollister, Calif.) went in for Bolling, making four saves to bolster Sweet Briar's defense. However, another two-goal period by the host school would see the Vixens fall behind 4-0 at the half.
The offense ramped up in the second half and better defensive play along with another four-save performance by Maggiora saw Sweet Briar hold Ramapo to a lone fourth-quarter goal as well as create numerous scoring opportunities in the circle.
With time winding down in the match, the score eventually settles at a 5-0 victory for the Roadrunners.
On the team play that has been displayed this season Head Coach
Hannah Lott stated, "We are so proud of Team 101. They brought to life the goals we have been working towards for years as well as our specific goals from this season. We gave everyone in the CSAC a run for their money and earning a chance to play for CSAC championship. With such a strong performance, Team 101 earned a berth for the ECAC tournament.
Team 101 causes chaos on the field moving the ball through the offense and they act like a brick wall in the back. The success of this team has been from the individuals, team, families and alums. We already have our eyes set on next season!"
Highlights
- Maggiora's 11 saves in the game marks a new career high.
- The Vixens held Ramapo to five goals, the lowest total from a CSAC team this season.
