SWEET BRIAR, Va. — Four Vixens found the back of the net on Saturday, as a two-goal outing by sophomore Kaylah Bailey led Sweet Briar in a season-opening loss to Montreat at the Sweet Briar Lacrosse Field.
The visiting Cavaliers (1-0) topped the Vixens (0-1) 19-5 in the season opener for both teams.
After Montreat's Izzy Knight scored the games' opening goal, Bailey (Virginia Beach, Va.) opened the Vixens' account with 24:18 on the clock off a free position opportunity.
The Cavaliers rattled off seven-straight goals before Bailey tallied her second of the afternoon with 7:10 left in the opening period.
Montreat scored four additional goals to close out the opening half with a 12-2 lead.
The second half saw Montreat outscore Sweet Briar 7-3, as first-years Jess Roberts (Woodburn, N.Y.) and Sarah Southard (Culpeper, Va.) both scored their first collegiate goals and sophomore Zerah Chase (Virginia Beach, Va.) notched her first goal of the season. Southard assisted on Roberts' goal, while Bailey added an assist to her stat line when Chase scored with 8:31 left in regulation.
Bailey led Sweet Briar with six ground ball pickups, five caused turnovers and three draw controls. Senior Madison Harpham also finished the day with five caused turnovers, while Roberts shared the team-high three draw controls with Bailey.
In goal, first-year Kat Navarro (Carlsbad, Calif.) recorded eight saves for the Vixens.
Dovie Yates led Montreat with 10 goals and two assists on the afternoon.
Five Vixens made their collegiate debut on Saturday, with Amber de Villers (Edison, N.J.) and Jamison Tarver (Kingwood, Texas) joining Southard, Roberts and Navarro as debutants.
Sweet Briar is scheduled to host Methodist on February 13 with a 1 p.m. first draw.
