de Souza, Wandling win in doubles; No. 18 Generals top Vixens

EXINGTON, Va. — Sweet Briar's top doubles pair, Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling, picked up the Vixens' first doubles win against Washington and Lee in at-least 29 years on Saturday, but the No. 18 Generals topped Sweet Briar 8-1 at the W&L Upper Courts.

Sweet Briar's (8-4, 4-1 ODAC) top duo of de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.), both sophomores, battled for an 8-5 victory over Taylor Garcia and Margaret Carlton for the Vixens' lone victory on the day.

Based on available results, Sweet Briar had not won a doubles match against Washington and Lee since at-least September 21, 1991. Match results from the Generals 7-2 win over Sweet Briar in the fall of 1991 were not available.

Back in 2021, the Vixens fought at both remaining doubles positions.

At No. 2 doubles first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) fell 8-2, while junior Alexia Alfaro (Laredo, Texas) and senior Ruth Lechner (Baltimore, Md.) were topped 8-3 at No. 3.

Singles action saw all six matches fall in favor of the Generals, with Washington and Lee earning victories in straight sets throughout the ladder.

At the top spot, de Souza won seven games but dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to Garcia.

Wandling won five games at No. 2, as Gabi Moss earned a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Kotany, Guilarte and Alfaro all won two games each in singles action.

Sweet Briar gets a break from match action, before returning to the Dennis Van Der Meer Center on April 6 for a 3 p.m. opening serve against Lynchburg.
