Avery Jones nets double-overtime winner; Vixens top Marlins for first time in 20 years

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Sweet Briar first-year Avery Jones picked an opportune time to score her first two collegiate goals, as Jones' second tally of the day was a double-overtime game-winner in the Vixens' 3-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan at Birdsong Field.

The Vixens (2-4) opened their account in the third minute when senior Alexis Jones (Suffolk, Va.) fed Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) for the first-years first collegiate goal.

Sweet Briar held the 1-0 advantage over the Marlins (1-7) throughout the first half, but four minutes into the second half, Raquel Kelly broke through for Virginia Wesleyan to knot the game at 1-1.

The Marlins took their first lead of the day in the 40th minute when Ryan Westpfahl found the back of the cage and gave Virginia Wesleyan the 2-1 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter started with Virginia Wesleyan holding the advantage in shots but in the 56th-minute, sophomore Ingrid Kalwitz Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile) assisted on junior Brigitte Gorman's (Chesapeake, Va.) second goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

The final four minutes of regulation saw the Vixens push for the winner, but time was not in their favor as the whistle sounded the end of regulation.

Despite outshooting the Marlins 3-2 in the first overtime period, Sweet Briar needed an extra 21 seconds to put an end to Tuesday's meeting.

Right off the opening whistle of the second overtime period, Alexis Jones found the stick of Avery Jones, who finished the Marlins off with her second goal of the day in the 71st minute of play.

In goal, senior Rosemary Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) was credited with four saves, while Gorman and sophomores Rae Rae Dillon (Hopewell, Va.) and Kaytee Reynolds (Sydney, Australia) were credited with one defensive save apiece.

Tuesday marked Sweet Briar's first victory over Virginia Wesleyan in over 20 years, when the Vixens beat the Marlins 3-2 on October 14, 2000.

Sweet Briar's penultimate game in the spring 2021 season is set for April 20, when the Vixens visit Lynchburg with a 7 p.m. opening whistle.
