AMHERST, Va. — Sophomore Ingrid Kalwitz Blanco scored for the second time this season, as the Vixens dropped a 2-1 decision at Amherst County High School to the visiting Wilson Phoenix.
After a scoreless opening half, Wilson (2-0) opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Breeann Sheaffer scored from 13 yards off an assist from Rebecca Webb.
Sweet Briar (2-6) answered 10 minutes later when the Vixens earned a penalty corner in the 45th minute. Kalwitz Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile) sent the corner pass to first-year Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) who delivered the ball to the near post, where Kalwitz Blanco redirected the ball into the back of the cage.
Kalwitz Blanco's goal was the second of the season, while Jones's assist was the first of her collegiate career.
The second Wilson penalty corner of the fourth period saw Sheaffer assist on a game-winning goal from Allison Reber in the 54th minute.
In goal, senior Rosemary Austin (Commerce Township, Mich.) made 10 saves for the Vixens.
