Vixens squash Wasps in ODAC Quarterfinal

SWEET BRIAR, Va. — The Vixens punched their ticket to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Semifinals for the first time since 2011, thanks to a 5-2 victory at the Dennis Van Der Meer Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon over Emory & Henry.

The Vixens (14-5) opened the day with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles by sophomores Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) and Allison Wandling (Mechanicsville, Va.) over the Wasps' (8-6) top duo of Tess Flanigan and Payton Holt.

With their victory at No. 1, de Souza and Wandling improved to 19-1 on the season and 17-1 against NCAA Division III opponents.

Sweet Briar took a two-point lead when first-year Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and sophomore Kate Kotany (Erd, Hungary) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Following an Emory & Henry win at No. 3 doubles, Sweet Briar picked up the first of three required singles victories at No. 2 when Wandling cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Flanigan.

Kotany gave the Vixens a 4-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Molly McMichael at No. 3 singles.

Emory & Henry earned a victory at No. 6 singles, but de Souza closed out the match for Sweet Briar with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Holt.

Sweet Briar's victory was the first in an ODAC tournament since a 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Roanoke in 2011.

With Saturday's 5-2 victory over Emory & Henry, Sweet Briar advances to the ODAC Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals at No. 2-seed Lynchburg on Wednesday, May 5 (time to be determined).
