Field Hockey Trounces Centenary (N.J.) in Home Opener

AMHERST, VA. – Sweet Briar field hockey (1-0, 1-0 CSAC) easily took down their first opponent of the season, Centenary (N.J.) (0-1, 0-1 CSAC), 9-1 on Saturday morning.

The Vixens started off hot in the first quarter thanks to a goal by junior Ingrid Kalwitx Blanco (Antofagasta, Chile) only 38 seconds into the game. First-year Lara Jost (Würzburg, Germany) would capitalize on a penalty corner seven minutes into the game to give Sweet Briar the 2-0 lead. Gorman would find the back of the goal for the second time in the quarter to close out the first 3-0

In the second quarter, the Vixens would repeat their three-goal performance thanks to tallies by sophomore Avery Jones (Union, Conn.), Gorman and sophomore Brynna Hughes (Richmond, Va.).

Hughes also kicked off scoring in the second half, getting her name on the scoresheet for the second time to bring the lead to 7-0. Another first-year, Jolin Daughety (Williamsburg, Va.), increased the lead to eight.

Centenary would get on the board to end the third quarter, but the lone fourth quarter goal by first-year Lauren Frank (Walton, N.Y.) gave Sweet Briar the 9-1 victory.
