Swimming Splits Double Dual with Ferrum, Virginia Wesleyan

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sweet Briar swimming (3-3, 3-1 ODAC) closed out its home slate with a win against Ferrum, 150-32, and a loss to Virginia Wesleyan, 148-78, in today's double dual meet.
 
The Vixen started the meet off with a second-place finish in the 400-meter medley relay. Junior Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.), sophomore Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.), senior Peyton Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) and graduate student Caroline Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) combined for a time of 5:14.97.
 
In the 800-meter freestyle sophomore Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) captured Sweet Briar's first victory of the meet with a time of 12:01.40.
 
Murphy and sophomore Acadia ElzHowe (Georgetown, Texas) finished third and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle with times of 2:34.90 and 2:50.63, respectively.
 
Carpenter captured a second-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:1.06. She was followed by sophomore May Catherine Warner (Virginia Beach, Va.) who came third with a time of 1:19.93 and C. Lewis in fourth who recorded a time of 1:20.13.
 
J. Lewis completed the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:31.95 for a third-place finish in her first individual race of the day.
 
Both Warner and first-year Dana Kriesien (Sun Valley, Idaho) recorded new personal best times of 30.20 and 35.15, respectively, in the 50-meter freestyle. Murphy, who also competed in the event, clocked in a time of 31.15 for a third-place finish.
 
In the ensuing 100-meter freestyle, Warner sat atop the podium after finishing the race in 1:09.84.
 
As the lone Vixen swimmer in the 200-meter backstroke, Carpenter finished second with a time of 2:47.84.
 
J. Lewis and Aparicio were the Sweet Briar swimmers competing in the 200-meter breaststroke. J. Lewis completed the race in 3:21.82 for second place while Aparicio totaled a time of 3:34.06 to finish fourth.
 
Carpenter and ElzHowe captured the third and fourth place spots in the 400-meter freestyle with times of 5:14.68 and 6:04.55, respectively.
 
In her second individual race of the day, C. Lewis placed second in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:22.47.
 
Murphy finished the last individual race of the meet on a high note, recording a new personal best time of 2:45.83 in the 200-meter IM to place second.
 
Sweet Briar closed out the meet with another second-place relay finish, this time in the 200-meter freestyle, as C. Lewis, Warner, Aparicio and Kriesien combined for a time of 2:12.01.
 
Highlights
  • Warner's 100-meter backstroke time of 1:19.93 and 100-meter freestyle time of 1:09.84 mark new personal bests.
  • Carpenter's performance in the 400-meter freestyle earned her a new personal best in that event.
  • J. Lewis earned another top-five finish in the 200-meter IM with a time of 3:10.17.

The Vixens will head to Farmville,Va. and hosts Hampden-Sydney to take on Randolph-Macon on Nov. 11.
