FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Sweet Briar tennis saw success on day one of the ITA Regional Championships at Mary Washington with two doubles teams advancing to the Round of 16 and two singles players advancing into play on day two.
The doubles pairing of de Souza/Wandling advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Simonson/Stambaugh (CUA) in the Round of 32, 8-0, while Andrade/Patino took down Ausfahl/Liu (JHU), 8-5, to move on.
Caro/Simhambhatla also saw success in their round robin bracket with an 8-3 win over Daigneault/Wylie (BC).
In singles play, senior
Ruth de Souza (Marilia, Brazil) advanced to the Round of 16 for the thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Irene Meng of Washington College in the Round of 64 and a 3-5, 6-1, 10-7 defeat of Erica Stutz of Swarthmore in the Round of 32.
Junior
Isabela Guilarte (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) will compete in the finals of her draw after taking down Isabella Sorhegui of Washington College and Sriya Krishnan of Haverford by scores of 8-1 and 8-5, respectively.
Highlights
- For the second-straight year, de Souza has advanced to the Round of 16.
- I. Guilarte remains perfect in singles tournament play with a 4-0 record.
- The doubles team of Caro/Simhambhatla have only lost one match over the course of the past two seasons and remain undefeated during the regular season.
