Soccer Drops Match to Salem (N.C.)

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sweet Briar soccer (0-2-0, 0-0-0 ODAC) dropped its second match of the season to the Salem Spirit (2-0-0, 0-0-0 USA South) yesterday by a score of 8-0.

The Spirit scored a quick trio of goals in the first thirteen minutes of the game before graduate student Caroline Leis (Ellicott City, Md.) got the first chance of the game for the Vixens, a shot to the bottom center of the goal that was saved by the Salem goalkeeper.

Another save off a chance from C. Lewis followed a successful corner kick for the Spirit to bring the match to 4-0.

The half would close out with a close call for Sweet Briar, with sophomore Emma Wilk (Roxbury, N.J.) knocking one off the post.

The intensity ramped up for the second half of play with three yellow cards given in four minutes.

Sophomore Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) saw a pair of balls kicked in off penalty restarts get close, forcing the Salem goalkeeper to make saves high and low to keep Sweet Briar off the board.

The Spirit tallied the first goal of the second half over 20 minutes into action which was followed by another close call from C. Lewis. However, Salem answered back to the Vixens' renewed offensive push with three more goals in a quick ten-minute succession to set the score at 8-0.

A final chance for J. Lewis on goal would bring the game to a close.
