Swimming Sweeps Season Series with Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – Sweet Briar swimming (4-4, 4-2 ODAC) completed a sweep of the season series against the Ferrum Panthers today with a 131-41 victory at the Swartz Gym Pool.
 
The Vixens captured first-place finishes in 10 of the 11 events, including victories in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
 
Junior Kass Carpenter (Mechanicsville, Va.) and sophomore Gaby Aparicio (Quetzaltenango, Guatemala) finish one-two in the 1650-yard freestyle with times of 20:40.83 and 22:52.24, respectively. Sophomore Mary Catherine Warner (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the field with a fourth-place finish.
 
Sophomore Jillian Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) and first-year  Caroline Lilly (Camden, N.C.) were the lone competitors in the 200-yard freestyle event. J. Lewis finished first with a time of 2:28.65 followed by Lilly who completed the race in 2:50.65.
 
In her first collegiate race for the Vixens, sophomore Madlen Kolar captured the victory in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.26. She was followed by graduate student Caroline Lewis (Ellicott City, Md.) who clocked in a time of 27.43.
 
Carpenter and Aparicio again claimed first and second place, respectively; this time in the 100-yard IM. Carpenter secured a time of 1:13.13 while Aparicio swam a 1:25.31 to finish ahead of their Panther competitors.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, sophomore Acadia ElzHowe recorded a time of 2:24.02 to place first, followed by senior Peyton Murphy (Norfolk, Va.) with a time of 2:37.49 in second.
 
C. Lewis and Kolar swapped places in the 100-yard freestyle with C. Lewis' first-place victory coming with a time of 1:00.29 and Kolar registering a 1:01.08.
 
Warner claimed her first victory of the day in the 100-yard backstroke thanks to a time of 1:13.55. She was followed by fellow Virginia native Murphy in second with a time of 1:17.37.
 
Lilly finished in second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 7:35.00 as the lone Vixen competitor in that race.
 
Sweet Briar closed out individual races with the 100-yard backstroke. J. Lewis led the field with her time of 1:18.46. Carpenter and Aparicio finished fourth and fifth in the race, respectively.
 
Highlights
  • C. Lewis' time of 1:00.29 in the 100-yard freestyle marks a new career-best for her during her time at Sweet Briar.
  • Kolar's time of 27.26 in the 50-yard freestyle is tied for C. Lewis' mark as the second best performance by a Vixen in that event so far this season.

This Vixens' next meet is set for Jan. 20 against Bridgewater and Hollins in Farmville, Va.
